Dear whānau/Parents,

We are delighted to let you know that we will be running our whole school tryathlon/do-athlon at 11am on Wednesday 20th March. This year we have invited Wairau Valley School along to join us for this event. We will host the event and have shared Kai and a BBQ afterwards, before our guests return home. If it is raining the event will be cancelled.

As the name says ‘Tryathlon & Do-athlon’ giving it a go and where everyone’s a winner!! We have added the Do-athlon, for those participants that have not got access to a bike.

We will begin this event with either the cycling or running, followed by the running or cycling and finishing with swimming. Children will run in year groups. Due to the increased number of children with the combined schools, we will run the course for the Year 5, 6, 7, and 8 beginning with the cycling at the Lakefront, running from the Lake back to school to complete the swim in our pool.  Whilst the Year 1, 2, 3, and 4 will run, cycle and swim the complete circuit at school.

The circuit will be marked out with cones/flags etc and all LRS children will be familiar with how the course will be run and expectations.

However, for this event to run smoothly and safely, we will be requiring parents to assist us. We will need adults at the start of the race, bike transition, spread along the course, at poolside, the finish line and help to return bikes to school. We will also be requiring support with kai and the BBQ. If you are available could you please let Liz know as soon as possible, all help greatly appreciated. Either leave a message at school or [email protected]

What your child needs:  Run – covered in shoes.  Swim – togs/towel

Bike – Bike guidelines have  gone home and must be returned signed by parent and child. Once this is done you child can bring their bike to school, so they can practice in advance. Bikes can be left here and children are responsible for locking them in Ngā manu o Tane (multi purpose room) overnight.

Bikes must have:

  1. working front & back brakes
  2. tyres pumped up

Children must wear:

  1. a fitted helmet
  2. closed (covered toes) shoes.
  3. No gumboots.

If your child’s individual biking consent form (Bike Guidelines) has not been returned could you please send this along so they can begin to practice.

If your child does not have a bike, could you please see if there is someone who they can borrow a bike and helmet. If it is not possible to source a bike, your child will run a do-athlon.

All times and updated information will be confirmed closer to the event date.

We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank ‘The Department of Conservation’ for granting us permission to use Kerr Bay and the nearby tracks at Lakeside. What a way to showcase our school!

Thank you all for your support and we hope you can join us.

Sue, Dan and Liz
